Business Acumen Fused with an Engineer’s Mindset
David is steeped in industry. He is an Independent Director, Advisor and Chartered Engineer. For many years he has advised National, Regional and Local government on business support, skills development, science and technology, infrastructure, manufacturing, and Innovation. He has been a non-executive Director and Trustee for over 20 years.
David now follows a "plural" career and is a Non-Executive Director at Start & Grow UK delivering business support services across England. He is also a Board Member of CP Cases Ltd, providing a worldwide design and manufacturing service for high-performance, ruggedised cases used in the transport, operation and storage of essential equipment for commercial, music and entertainment, medical, communications and military applications.
He is a Board advisor to NexGen Tree Shelters who have developed a bio-degradable, plastic free tree shelter utilising natural materials and low grade sheep wool that degrades over a five year period in situ. He advises the Board on technical matters, including developing a full scale production and logistics package for volume manufacturing and also general non-executive activities, growth strategy and governance. He is also a Board advisor to Rasei Ltd a start-up company focused on the deployment of Graphene enhanced products and solutions, particularly with advanced composites. They take engineering problems and turn them into innovative technology solutions that help reduce operational cost and support the world's environmental challenges
He is also a Board Advisor to PyTerra Ltd an innovative environmental value trading system and Lumaca Capital who provide a service led proposition to provide a funding solution for companies that struggle to raise larger amounts of capital post seed financing rounds. Indeed he works with various companies involved with investment activities from banks to Angel networks through to VC/PE investors and Government supported programmes such as the BGF.
Strategic Insight: David works within businesses to help them create and achieve their growth aspirations. He guides the development of strategies and the consequential detailed programmes to turn the strategy into reality.
Advocacy
He has an extensive network to help find prospective partners, suppliers and customers through conventional means and through social media and business network building.
Good Governance: As a member of the IoD's National Council he contributed to the debate on good governance and helped guide the IoD's policy initiatives on this topic. David is an experienced contributor at board level to governance structures, is able to articulate best practice processes and is an advocate of transparency and open communication as a means of achieving business objectives. He has served on numerous boards and on nomination, risk, pension advisory, remuneration and audit committees.
Operational Effectiveness: Aside from his strategic leadership, David is an acknowledged expert in 'Lean Manufacturing' 'Lean Enterprise' and Industry 4.0. As a result, he is a regular advisor on the development and implementation of major process change programmes.
David is a Chartered Engineer, a Life Fellow of the Institute of Directors, a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and a Member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. He is a Freeman of the City of London, a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of World Traders and an Associate Member of the RAF Club. In his spare time he is and avid cyclist, season ticket holder at Portsmouth FC, classic car enthusiast and former coach and committee member of Farnham Cricket club.
